Coasts

For coastal communities the sea provides livelihood and food security as well a place where the spirits of ancestors watch over those who take to the sea. It’s also a place where there are serious concerns in terms of over-tourism, the displacement of local communities and the resultant over-commercialism of coasts and their communities.

Yet there are still multiple options for LoST travellers – national parks, community-based opportunities to learn about what the coast, the sea and mangroves mean for local communities and First Nation people. Importantly, many of these initiatives of local communities and First Nations people are focused on coastal protection, and also providing opportunities for travellers to understand more about the everyday life of coastal communities.
